Purpose: The information committee of the Korean Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (KSMBS) performed the nationwide survey of operations from the first case to the case on 31th Dec 2013. This study is to report the patients¡¯ characteristics, postoperative outcomes after bariatric and metabolic surgery in 2013.
Materials and Methods: The 5,467 cases from 32 institutions were collected by the nationwide survey. Among them, the patients¡¯ demographics and comorbidities, operation characteristics (type, invasiveness, revision, and operative time), and short term outcomes (hospital stay, morbidity and mortality in hospital) of cases in 2013 were analyzed.
Results: In 2013, 1,687 operations in 1,686 cases were performed at 29 institutions. The most frequently performed operation was adjustable gastric banding (1,210, 71.8%), followed by sleeve gastrectomy (236, 14.0%), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (185,11.0%), and band removal (21,1.2%). The 73.8% of operations were performed in private hospital, in which most commonly performed operation was adjustable gastric banding (89.5%). Mean age of patients was 34.7 years old, and male:female ratio was 1:4.3. Mean body mass index was 36.3 kg/m2. The 65.9% of patients had comorbidities, of which liver disease was most common, followed by hypertension (21.7%), dyslipidemia (17.3%), and diabetes (16.5%). Mean hospital stay after operation was 2.5 days. The 1.9% of cases had morbidities, which was intraabdominal bleeding, wound problem, ileus and so on. And there was no mortality.
Conclusion: This report showed that 1,687 operations in 2013 were safely performed with low morbidity and no mortality. However, it should be considered that there were lots of missing data and further data collection is needed.
